Our Therapy specialities include
One-on-one therapy for adults and teens navigating anxiety, burnout, trauma, identity, or life changes. We help you reconnect with yourself, clarify your needs, and move forward with greater confidence, self-compassion, and emotional insight.
Support for couples/relationships, polycules, and families seeking deeper connection, better communication, or help through change. We affirm all relationships and help you co-create trust, understanding, and emotional safety, together.
Therapy that centers and celebrates LGBTQIA2S+ identities. Whether you’re exploring gender, coming out, or healing from harm, we provide affirming care where you don’t need to educate your therapist, just show up as you are.
Trauma-informed care for those living with complex PTSD, relational wounds, or systemic oppression. Our approach blends warmth, neuroscience, and somatic strategies to help you feel safe, empowered, and whole again, at your own pace.
Affirming therapy for individuals and relationships practicing polyamory, ENM, and/or kink and beyond. We support your values, identity, and autonomy, without pathologizing your choices, while helping you grow connection, clarity, and confidence.
For those who “do it all” but feel overwhelmed, anxious, or never enough. Learn how to quiet self-criticism, regulate your nervous system, and shift from fear to self-trust in a space that honors your pace and emotional needs.
Gentle support for grief, identity shifts, caregiving, or major changes. We create space for your full emotional experience, no pressure to “move on,” just support to help you navigate change with honesty, grace, and resilience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you offer virtual therapy?
Yes. We offer secure telehealth therapy for clients in all states where we are licensed (VA, MD, DC, NC, MA, FL, RI, VT, WV, and ME). Many clients appreciate the flexibility and comfort of accessing therapy from their own space.
Are you LGBTQIA2S+ affirming?
Absolutely. Our practice is deeply affirming of all gender identities and sexual orientations. We celebrate diversity and create space for exploration, healing, and authenticity without judgment or the need to educate your therapist.
Do you work with polyamorous or ethically non-monogamous relationships
Yes. We specialize in working with ENM/poly/kink-involved individuals and relationship systems. We understand the nuances and challenges of these dynamics and offer respectful, knowledgeable care without pathologizing your relationship structure.
What if I am struggling with a family member's identity?
Everyone processes change differently, and it’s okay to feel unsure. At Rising Sun, we offer a space to explore your feelings with honesty and care, not judgment, as you navigate your own path of understanding and growth.
What if my partner says they're poly and I don't think I am?
You don’t have to have all the answers right away. Rising Sun provides a supportive space to sort through your thoughts, clarify your needs, and honor your own journey, whatever shape it takes. Remember, monogamy is also a sociosexual identity.
What can I expect in the first session?
Your first session is a time to get to know each other. We’ll talk about what brings you in, what you’re hoping for, and any questions or concerns you have. You don’t have to have everything figured out—your therapist will help guide the conversation at your pace.
How long are sessions and how often will we meet?
Sessions are typically 50 minutes long. Most clients start with weekly sessions, and we can adjust the frequency over time based on your goals, progress, and availability.
Do you take insurance?
We are out-of-network with insurance companies. While we provide detailed receipts for clients (sometimes referred to as superbills) who wish to seek reimbursement, we do not submit claims or communicate with insurance companies.
What issues do you specialize in?
Our specialties include:
- LGBTQIA2S+ affirming therapy
- Trauma and complex PTSD
- Ethically non-monogamous and kink-informed relationships
- Anxiety, perfectionism, and burnout
- Relationship therapy (couples/relationships, polycules, families)
- Grief, identity exploration, and major life transitions
- Neurodivergence
- Chronic health conditions including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS)
What if I’ve had a bad therapy experience in the past?
If you’ve had a difficult or harmful experience in therapy, you deserve real credit for even considering returning. No one deserves mistreatment from a mental health professional. There are other options, and Rising Sun offers a space to begin healing from what happened.
How do I know if we’re a good fit?
A good fit in therapy is essential. We offer free 15-minute consultations to help you get a sense of our approach and see if it feels right. If we’re not the best fit, we’ll gladly help you find someone who is.
Can I work with you if I’m not sure what’s “wrong”?
Yes. You don’t need a diagnosis or a major crisis to come to therapy. Many clients start because something just doesn’t feel right—they’re stuck, sad, overwhelmed, or questioning who they are. We’re here to explore that with you.
What if I’m scared to start therapy?
It’s completely normal to feel nervous or even scared about starting therapy. Opening up to someone new —especially about things you may have kept hidden for a long time—can feel overwhelming. We want you to know: you’re not alone in that feeling. At Rising Sun Therapy & Wellness, we move at your pace. You don’t need to have the “right” words, a clear plan, or even know exactly what you want to work on. Starting therapy is a courageous step, not because you have all the answers, but because you’re willing to explore them. We’re here to build trust gently, offer support without pressure, and co-create a space where you feel safe to be yourself—no matter where you’re starting from.
